Some people may think it was due to emissions and regulations, but that was not the case. James R. Fuller, an American born Volkswagen executive in the 80s. He was a true performance car enthusiast and had worked for Audi - Porsche just before transfering over to VWoA (VW of America). Fuller was one of the people who convinced VW to bring the Passat and Corrado over, although that happened after his death. In December of 1988 he happened to be one of the passengers on a terrorist hijacked plane when coming back from Frankfurt. Some of you may remember Pan Am Flight 103. VW was already "on the fence" about bringing the AWD, Widebody, G60 supercharged Golf on steroids to the US market and the Rallye's fate had been sealed after Fuller died. We at least got the Corrado and Passat thanks to this man.
