Toyota and VW wanted to help each other.
What happens when you're a German econo-car company in the 90s and want to compete with other the 1-Ton trucks in the industry? You strike a deal with Toyota of course! In 1989 Volkswagen and Toyota struck a deal, as Toyota wanted a bigger market share of the European 1-Ton pickup utility market.
Basically a 5th Gen Hilux with a VW badge
The VW Taro was fully engineered by Toyota from the chassis to the drivetrain. From 1989-1994 it came with a 2.4 Liter diesel engine with 82bhp and 122lb/ft of torque. These were all built IN GERMANY. When 1994 came around they released a 4x4 version which was manufactured in Japan.
All strange things come to an end.
